Fire Prevention Month and School Fire Safety Compliance

Pursuant to Proclamation 115-A, s.1966, the month of March is declared as the National Fire Prevention Month. This year's theme is "Sa Pag-iwas sa Sunog Di Ka Nag-iisa."


Relative thereto and in accordance with DepEd Order No. 72, s.2012 or the "Continuing Fire Safety and Awareness Program," DepEd Order No. 13, s.2013 entitled "Reiterating the Observance of the Fire Prevention Month Through the Continuing Fire Safety and Awareness Program," DepEd Order No. 28, s.2016 or "Strengthening the Fire Safety and Awareness Program," and DepEd Order No. 53, s.2022 or the "Mandatory Unannounced Earthquake and Fire Drills in Schools," schools are enjoined to support and make the observance of the Fire Prevention Month as meaningful as possible by conducting activities that will raise awareness on fire safety and the importance of fire prevention and preparedness among school officials, personnel and staff, and pupils/students, such as but not limited to the following:

A. conduct of orientation/symposium/forum/lectures on fire safety for learners and personnel (e.g. proper usage of fire extinguishers, fire prevention tips, what to do during and after a fire incident, civilian response or first aid in fire emergencies, etc.);

B. conduct educational information campaign or integration of fire safety and prevention topics in the different subjects to have an outreach effect on the safety awareness levels and practices in their own homes and communities;

C. conduct fire safety prevention measures (e.g. corrective actions by giving priority consideration to proper housekeeping and regular checking of electrical wiring and appliances, ensuring availability and functionality of fire safety equipment and fire alarm activation procedure, and removal of blockage of fire exits);

D. crafting/updating school contingency plan for fire; and/ or

E. inviting personnel from Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) for periodic/regular fire safety inspection and/or renewal of Fire Safety Inspection Certificate.
